During my lunch break today, I was watching the news, and one of the news breaks was with special guest Hilary Duff to talk about her PSA campaign about "Stop Saying 'That's So Gay!" I honestly thought it was a joke at first, but, it ends up being that it's totally serious. Even commercials. With other celebrities supporting it.

First and foremost, does anybody else notice that even though they're trying to get you to stop using a "derogatory" word such as gay, they're still encouraging the insulting ethics? Just rephrasing it? It's totally hypocritical.
Homosexuals are almost looking for something to bitch about now and need celebrity exposure to "get their word heard". Which is pathetic.
Why are you taking that so personally?
You brats "stole" the word from it's original meaning anyway. Get over yourself.
gay [gey] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation adjective, -er, -est, noun, adverb
–adjective
1. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.
3. given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.
4. licentious; dissipated; wanton: The baron is a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies.
You're like the millionth meaning behind a word that's just been "claimed" from where it originated. Welcome aboard the slang train.
Same goes for fag, dork, cock, bitch or any other entendre.
It's only insulting if you think it's insulting. If you're so proud to be homosexual and want to fight for such a pointless "cause", then just embrace yourself, love yourself, and quit starting ridiculous dramatic temper tantrums. Being gay isn't so you can be different and have something to croak and moan about, I'm pretty sure last time I check being a homosexual was sexual interest if not emotional interest/attraction towards the same sex?
Please.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I myself am bisexual. I'm sexually attracted to women. Emotionally, I am not. Seeing as 99.97% of us are complete nut cases, whores, psychotics, ignorant, and just flat out retarded, so dating any females is strictly out of the question. To me, if you're seeing someone, you're seeing that one person. You're taken. None of this "it isn't cheating if it's the same sex" bullshit. Another person is cheating. Cheating is cheating. Just admit you're a slut. Thanks.
Anyway, that's a whole other ball park, since I get told or encouraged with that crap all the time. Pigs.
When I was watching this news story on tv, they brought in another special guest of a lesbian student from some high school. She went on a rant about how she's been physically assaulted from people because she's gay. Alright, so there are haters in the world. Wake up. You can apply that same bullshit sob story to just about every minority, every minor, every female, every lower class, some upper class, other countries. etc etc.
People are too negative and want to cause fights over unnecessary things.
It's almost like how they use rainbows for their "signature". Dude, rainbows came from an optical effect from the whole spectrum of light thru moisture, crystals, or what have you. aka science. You're not science. You're a choice (or environmental influence depending on who you are lol).
So on this PSA campaign website, they even have a little blurb to what words really mean. So what, are you broadcasting that you "own" the definition of gay? What's that called... a contradiction?
So, I guess what I'm trying to say.... is I think people need to fight for better causes than double meaning (hell 7th meaning) words and learn to embrace more than attack.

Comments
"gay" is a term which homosexuals were deemed, not one they chose. Gay equated to care-free, which equated to being irresponsible and not respectable, thus it became a derogatory term used for homosexuality.
A Faggot/fag was a bundle of sticks used to burn homosexuals alive.
So neither of the two words were stolen.
Also, Homosexuals don't fight for the right for marriage as some kind of plight against heterosexuals. They do so because they feel emotionally for the same sex as they do sexually.
Everybody finds some kind of sexual attraction to both genders, and those who don't are repressed and/or lying. The difference is the emotional attraction, in my opinion.
There's more, but.. I'm not sure you'll take any of this seriously.
You can spill all you want, I'll read it. Take it seriously. Take offense to it? Not likely.
fag [fag] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation verb, fagged, fag·ging, noun
–verb (used with object)
1. to tire or weary by labor; exhaust (often fol. by out): The long climb fagged us out.
2. British. to require (a younger public-school pupil) to do menial chores.
3. Nautical. to fray or unlay the end of (a rope).
–verb (used without object)
4. Chiefly British. to work until wearied; work hard: to fag away at French.
5. British Informal. to do menial chores for an older public-school pupil.
–noun
6. Slang. a cigarette.
7. a fag end, as of cloth.
8. a rough or defective spot in a woven fabric; blemish; flaw.
9. Chiefly British. drudgery; toil.
10. British Informal. a younger pupil in a British public school required to perform certain menial tasks for, and submit to the hazing of, an older pupil.
11. a drudge.
Where the hell are you saying it means to burn people?
I admit that "stolen" was probably not the best of choice to deem any word association in my entry, but it's the best I can explain on the emphasis of how people are so torn up on double entendres.
Faggot, used in England in the 1300's, was a term for a bundle of sticks. Since those sticks were mainly used for fires the word became a term for burning sticks. Heretics in those times were burned at the stake, over a faggot- or bundle of sticks. Later in Britian, the term was used as slang, applied to shrewed women.
The term faggot used toward homosexuality appeared in print in 1914 in the united states. That was the first time it had been used against homosexuals.. The lineage suggests that the word transgressed as slang through 1. heretics 2. women and then 3. homosexuals.
So, to flog a dead horse, yes- the word is derogatory, and was denoted to Homosexuals, just as Gay had been.
When the original meaning of these kinds of words are lost (for instance, the word nigger originally meant 'apart from a crowd, or stands out') the intended meaning, or assumed meaning, are what takes precedence.
When you call someone a fag, you are not referring to a cigarette, a cloth, or being tired. You're using slander to dehumanize an individual to assert superiority over them.
Besides, the british definitions do not work over seas quite as practically. It may still be normal to ask for a fag and a light there.. but in the United States, that is not commonly applied to cigarettes. Just as nobody calls an elevator a lift, or a cookie a biscuit. The other meanings are, for all intensive purposes, lost to Americans.
One example of this is how the Swazstika was used several times in history before the Nazi's as a symbol of Good Luck. Native Americans, Bhuddists, and Wiccans used this symbol. However the meaning that is now most commonly associated to the Swazstika is relative to the Nazi's. Try walking through harlem with a swazstika on your chest, and see if you could explain it's double meaning then.. people will not take pity, because the assumed definition is overwhelmingly more obvious.
Bringing up the nazi's again.. In hitler youth classes, children would be exposed to daily video images equating the jewish to rats. Propaganda billboards also made this equation. Basically children were brainwashed into believing that jews really were as lowly as rats. As full of disease.. and so forth and so on.
So using "gay" to refer to anything bad or idiotic.. is just like equating jews to rats. You're equating gays to everything bad in the world.
"connotation"
The n-word is another example of a word that started out as just an ordinary word and was then turned into something used to hurt people. Granted that happened many years ago, but still you're not calling black people whiners for not liking the way that word turned out.
I guess that ball park is just something I won't understand.
What makes it funny is my best friend, who's black, doesn't even get it herself and it pisses her off so much lol
Speaking of English, just FYI the word "infamous" is not a synonym for "really famous." Just a tip :)
